10 IMPRESSIVE PROJECTS BY PORTUGUESE ARCHITECTS

In 1992, Álvaro Siza Vieira won the Pritzker Prize, the “Nobel” for world architecture; the same award was given to Eduardo Souto de Moura in 2011.

Although these architects have elevated the name of Portuguese architecture, the fact is that their art enjoys today a moment of prestige and international projection that is not restricted to these two names.

In this article we will reveal 10 original and surprising architectural projects signed in recent years by Portuguese and built in Portugal.

EDP HEADQUARTERS (Lisbon)

The building designed by the Aires Mateus team received in 2017 the Valmor Prize, the highest architectural award in Lisbon.

Lisbon Cruise ships terminal

Projected by José Carrilho da Graça, it was awarded the Valmor prize in 2017 and nominated in 2019 for the Mies van der Rohe European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture.

GS1 HEADQUARTERS (Lisbon)

GS1 Headquarters

The studio Promontório paired together with the artist Vhils in creating this building that brought them nominations for the 2017 WAF – World Architecture Festival, in the office building category, and for the 2018 RIBA awards, granted by the Royal Institute of British Architects.

SAMBADE’S HOUSE (Penafiel)

Sambade’s house

Studio Spaceworkers, led by Henrique Marques and Rui Dinis, is responsible for this housing unit, nominated in 2015 to the ArchDaily International Building of the Year Award.

HOUSE IN OURÉM

House in Ourém

Filipe Saraiva won the distinguished International Architecture Award in 2018 with a unique architectural project. The architect designed his own House in Ourém, transposing to real scale the five lines drawing done by a five year old.

Studio And-re, from Bruno André and Francisco Ré, projected a building in 2019 that gained them a nomination to the Mies van der Rohe awards.

LEIXÕES CRUISE SHIPS TERMINAL (Porto)

Leixões cruise ships terminal

This creation is a work of Luís Pedro Silva and in 2016 won both the public architecture category award given by the North American publication ArchDaily and the AZ awards from Azure magazine.

ARCHIPELAGO – RIBEIRA GRANDE CONTEMPORARY ARTS CENTER (São Miguel, Azores)

A partnership between studio Menos é Mais and the architect João Mendes Ribeiro that granted them the 2016 FAD Architectural Prize and put them on the shortlist for the Mies van der Rohe Award in 2015.

“HERDADE DO FREIXO” WINE CELLAR

Herdade do Freixo wine cellar

The wine cellar for this vineyard, designed by Frederico Valsassina, won the international architecture award given by the publication Archdaily in 2018.

House of the four houses

This house, created by the PROD studio, was object of an extensive article in the prestigious Wallpaper magazine.
