LISBON WINE ROUTES: Encostas d’Aire

From Lisbon head north to Fatima by the A1. You’ll find two mandatory stops, little to do with wine, though: at Serras de Aire and Candeeiros National Park are the subterranean wonders of the caves of Mira de Aire. And nearby, the Fatima Sanctuary also known as the ’Altar of the World’ with her new cathedral and the sacred Chapel of Apparitions. This route will then lead you to Ourem and the first stop at a winery, the Quinta do Montalto, while the Monumento Nacional das Pegadas de Dinossauros (footprints of dinossaurs) is a stroll not to be missed. The road then leaves at Pombal and a visit to the Louriçal Convent and the Museum of Popular Portuguese Art, a great way to end the day. Leiria should be your next destination with wines and regional snacks at the Quinta da Serradinha. Take your time before trying out the Center for Intercultural Dialogue or the MIMO – Museum of Moving Images. Two astounding triumphs of medieval architecture wait for you in Batalha and Alcobaça, with their celebrated and majestic convents. But Alcobaça holds the ace in the hole when it comes to wine with Quinta dos Capuchos and the Wine Museum, not forgetting the Monk’s Park (Parque dos Monges) with its medieval village and the Museu dos Doces Conventuais for all that is sweet and sugared. The route ends at Nazaré, celebrated worldwide for the incomparable surf waves and the untouched everyday life of fishermen, in itself a secular portrait of Portugal.
