Alqueidão Fort

It invites you to step through the scenarios of the Third French Invasion – that took place here on October 12th, 1810, in what became one of the bloodiest fights and one of the most striking episodes of the ‘Peninsular War’, opposing the Anglo-Portuguese and the French troops. If by one side, it reveals how this municipality was determinant in the history of Portugal and Europe, on the other it provokes you to grab a map and just start on inspiring walking trails, where the main protagonist is evidently, the scenery. Along the way, you’ll be able to discover gallant human constructions, such as fortresses, churches, military roads, windmills and museums, that will surely intensify your touring experience. Their value is well reckoned and you can find out why when visiting two of these monuments, classified as of Portuguese National Interest – the Torres Vedras Defensive Lines and the St. Quentin Church; or while you follow, on foot or on a mountain bike, dozens of miles of tracks with superb views of the hills and the golden fields.

Windmills

Or still, when you become enthralled with the grouping of windmills that beautify different sceneries, all representing what was once one of the main agricultural activities of this municipality, the mowing of cereals.
