Teresa Tavares, Actress

Very typical, full of character and tradition, a land of good people and great food.

She was born 36 years ago in Azambuja, and lives nowadays in Lisbon. As an actress, she has participated in many projects in Portugal, namely in television (particularly on the TVI TV channel, where she most recently starred on the soap opera “Love after Love” – Amar Depois de Amar), in cinema and in theatre. Her daughter is one of her biggest personal life achievements.

How do you present the Municipality to those that don’t know about it? Very typical, full of character and tradition, a land of good people and great food.

Complete the following sentences:

Only in AZAMBUJA will I find… Torricado, that I love! And the May Fair.

A perfect day in AZAMBUJA includes… Spent in family, with a stroll through the Lezírias, a visit to the manège, to satisfy my desires for horseback riding, and a good diner around there (followed by a session of fado music).

We cannot leave AZAMBUJA without… Trying torricado, with codfish, of course. And to have a stroll by the Lezírias.

Your best of AZAMBUJA:

Places that we cannot miss visiting and the reason why:

a monument: the Azambuja Parish Church, for its beauty.

a museum: the Sebastião Mateus Arenque Museum, that tells a little more of the history of this place, and where one can still find an oil painting of someone called Manuel Tavares, who happens to be my dear father).

– a garden: there’s the village main garden, but I will also refer the Mata das Virtudes (Woods of the Virtues).

a panoramic view: the view of the river Tejo, granted from the site of the Queen’s Palace and all along the way there.

The best leisure / outdoor activities in Azambuja: in first place, I would say horseback riding; it’s always good to ride and explore the rural area and then do some local wine tasting.

The best hotels: Casa do Alfaro

The best restaurants:

– For Portuguese cuisine: Oficina dos Sabores

– For fish and seafood: Aveiramariscos

– For appetizers: Picadeiro and, during their season, ‘make a run’ of the Tasquinhas (typical taverns).

– For a “good deal” meal: Mascoto

– For late night dining: Aveiramariscos

– To enjoy the view: Since we don’t have a panoramic restaurant, I could suggest an enogastronomic experience at Quinta da Lapa, in Manique do Intendente.

The best coffee houses: Pastelaria do Zé and Favorita, with the wonderful Queijadinhas de Azambuja (cheese pastry).

The best stores for shopping: I recommend the traditional products, above all (leather boots, horseback riding accessories and alike) and the hand tanned hides that can be found around this area.
